DIVISION
Lesson 1
Today we are looking at factors.
Does anyone know what factors are?
Let’s take a look at this anchor chart.
Today we are looking at factors.
Does anyone know what factors are?
Let’s take a look at this anchor chart.
You are now going to create your own version of this factor ninja poster in your workbooks (you could also create it digitally, using Pic Collage or Book Creator to do this.)
It can be tricky to find factors if you don’t know your times tables!
Let’s have a look at this chart that gives us some tips that are extremely helpful when dividing and finding factors.

Activity:
Group 1
Group 1
- First you are going to watch the Maths Online Video “Factor Trees” (Video 1630).
- Then you are going to choose one of the following numbers to create your own factor tree: 20, 24, 56, 64, 100, 120.
Group 2
- First you are going to watch the Maths Online Video “Divisibility Tests” (Video 1546).
- Complete the questions after the video (the second tab above the video.)
If you forget how to apply the divisibility rules, you can find them here.
Lesson 2
Warm up
Introduction
Today we are going to be learning about short division. Firstly we are going to watch this video explaining short division and then we will be having a go at some questions altogether.
Watch Maths Online Video “Short Division” (Video 2626.)
Activities
Group 1:
Division can be quite tricky to understand, so today we are going to use pictures to help us learn about short division.
Introduction to division worksheet with visuals.
Now we will work with remainders.
Introducing remainders worksheet.
Group 2:
Let’s put what we just learnt into practise. Have a go at these questions!
Short Division Questions
Reflection
Discuss with a partner:
The most important thing I learned today was...
I need help with...
I would like to learn about...

Warm up:
Terminator
Introduction
Today we are going to have a look at some strategies that you can use when working out short division problems.
Activities
Group 1: Division Board Game
Group 2: Investigating Division Vocabulary
Today you are going to be looking at vocabulary related to Division.
Using a Maths Dictionary you will create a vocab card to add to the Maths wall, with non-linguistic representations for one of the following words:
Divisor, Dividend, Quotient, Division

Lesson 3
Activity
1: Making connections between multiplication and division:
Complete the activities on this site.
2. Dividing Decimals by whole numbers
3. We are going to watch the Maths Online Video 3147 and learn how to divide decimals by other decimal numbers and then we will have a go altogether. (Some questions you are able to use short division, others you will need to use long division).

Lesson 4
Warm up: Terminator
Introduction:
Watch this video to learn how to divide fractions We are going to go through the method used when dividing fractions.
We are going to divide ¾ by 1/5.
Complete this by following the steps on This Anchor Chart
Activities:
Group 1:
Create an explain everything video explaining about how to divide fractions following the KCF method. Make sure you provide an example.
Then:
With a partner you are going to play this game. Dividing Fractions
Group 2:
We are going to watch the Dividing Decimals by Decimals video and refresh our memories on how to divide decimals by other decimal numbers Have your mini whiteboards ready to practise the strategies we see.
Now we will have a go altogether in this activity:
Division By Decimals Questions
Lesson 5:
Warm up: Terminator
Introduction:
Let’s watch this video about the CUBES Method.
Now let’s try these steps with a problem of our own: Jasmin buys 64 lollies for her party. She has 6 bags and needs to put an equal amount of lollies in each bag. Can she do this? How many will she have remaining?
We are going to complete this together using the CUBES problem solving method.
Activities:
Division worded problems matrix: http://bit.ly/1V3o4zh
Mild - single step, short division mainly no remainders
Spicy - single and multi step, remainders and decimals
Hot - Decimals, Multi step, lots of information
You can decide which level you will start at, based on your confidence. If you start on Mild or Spicy and find it easy, you can try questions from the next level up.
Reflection
Going through these with you.

Lesson 6:
LI: We are learning to divide by powers of 10.
Introduction:
Dividing decimals by powers of 10.
We will now model this concept with whole numbers and decimals. I need a few students to stand in a row holding a digit each. I will place a ball between them to be the decimal point
Activities
Group 1:Today you are going to have a go at the following questions. Remember if you are dividing you are making the number smaller (moving the decimal left) and if you are multiplying you are making the number bigger (moving the decimal right).
Dividing by powers of 10
Group 2:
Watch any of the following videos:
The Ratio and Fraction Song (Stereo Hearts) (3:42)
Maths Online Video 3188 (2:36)
Math Antics Ratio and Rates (8:49)
We are now going to work through the following questions altogether. We are going to find the ratios and also simplify them.
